Arlyn’s Goals

Arylic | Mixed Media on Canvas | 12" x 9" x 1.5" | Private Collection

I was asked to create a portrait for the personal care home where Arlyn spent her last years of life. I took on this commission as I was inspired by a courageous woman's zest for life.

Every time I looked at Arlyn's face while painting this portrait, I had to smile back—oh, that infectious smile! I worked from several images but chose to use this one because of the message on her shirt—NEVER GIVE UP—and was inspired to add one of Arlyn's more poignant poems, "Goals."

When I see disabled people
Reach the top of a mountain
Act in a movie
Stand up for their rights
It makes me want
To move forward
Instead of sitting
Observing life I see the possibilities
And find the courage
Inside myself
To work things out
So that I too may say
Look what I have done

Learn About Commissions

I enjoy taking on custom work when I have space and feel inspired. Learning about other’s stories, loved ones, and experiences is an honor and challenge I do not take for granted. Therefore, I do not accept all custom work, but I always value inquiries.
